J.D. KESTNER
Baby Jean

18-1/2" J.D. Kestner 247, known as "Baby Jean".
Known to most collectors as "Hilda's Sister", Jean doesn't resent the affiliation, as she is quite fond of her "big Sis".
Baby Jean's features include a perfect bisque head with soft blue sleep-eyes, an open mouth with two upper glass teeth and a wobble tongue. She retains her original plaster pate, and wears an antique blonde human hair wig.
The Kestner body, a bent-limb baby model, does retain the original finish showing normal wear, and there is a repair to fingers on the left hand.
A long, lacy, baby dress and lacy cap are the perfect choices for this little one, and she loves her cream wool sweater with its soft pink accents.
Little Jean really is quite an agreeable baby, wouldn't you say?

26-1/2" classic German closed-mouth Child by J.D. Kestner, mold #128. Features include perfect, luminous bisque, extremely expressive bright blue sleep-eyes, a lovely, full blond mohair wig, and a deeply dimpled chin. On a fully-jointed wood and composition body, it retains a lovely finish, with just a bit of refreshing to the lower legs, and a repair to one finger.
This marvelous doll absolutely "glows" in her very pretty dress of cream and navy silk, with its abundant eyelet details, and silk-covered buttons, while her face is softly framed by her shirred tulle bonnet. Antique tan leather shoes and lace-trimmed under clothing complete her very stylish presentation.
A truly comprehensive doll collection demands some classic examples, what better place to begin?

J.D. KESTNER 243

We have yet to see a J.D. Kestner 243 Oriental baby that we did not instantly fall in love with, and this happy fellow is certainly no exception. Originally made for and retailed at Gump's of San Francisco, luckily this one has made his way down the coast a bit right into downtown Carmel – but, we have the feeling – not for long!
First, this little guy is such a great size at thirteen and one-half inches long. He retains his original black human hair wig, brown glass sleep-eyes, plus he has pretty, perfect bisque and a darling expression. His marked Kestner body is properly tinted and is in very good condition overall, although showing a bit of wear on the ankles, and there is a repair to the thumb on his left hand.
Wearing what appears to be an original costume of colorfully embroidered Chinese silks in a variety of jewel tone colors, this little fellow will do his best to become the crowning jewel in your collection.

J.D. Kestner Co.
Max and Moritz

Max & Moritz, a very rare pair of naughty German bisque children from J.D. Kestner Co.
Originally created as comic-strip style characters by Wilhelm Busch, circa 1912, the doll versions of Max and Moritz have taken on lives of their own!
Max, of this beloved duo features sculpted hair in a black-painted, pageboy style, side-glancing intaglio eyes, and a beaming smile. Moritz features red sculpted hair with a topknot (typical loss to very tip of topknot-a long story), side-glancing intaglio eyes, and a wide smile. Both feature composition and wooden bodies, especially made for the mischievous twosome.
Their character-style clothing is most likely original. Max and Moritz look forward to wreaking havoc in a new home near you...if not under your very own roof!

$34,000.00 the pair, of course!

Twenty-one inches of rarity is this sublime "disgruntled" Heubach Boy, impressed only Germany 8.
We really have no idea what his problem is...it couldn't be his perfect bisque head with its rare molded ring attachment feature, or his blue-painted intaglio eyes, or his extremely rare modeling.
His obvious discomfort could not be caused by his jointed composition child body.
We definitely know his amazing original, (possibly Swedish) ensemble with its hand-embroidery is not the root of his troubles.
We like to think he is a perfectly happy boy – normally– he's just making a funny face for his baby sister!
He'll make this funny face for you, too, and that is a promise!

Thank you, J.

The only aspect which keeps this amazingly pristine 18 1/2" German dolly from miraculous "mint in box" status, is the simple fact...there is no box!
Otherwise, this darling child from the Alt, Beck and Gottschalk firm marked ABG 1362 has perfect and very pretty bisque, brown glass sleep-eyes with a full set of lashes, the fabulous original mohair wig with its original pink hair bow, a ball-jointed wood and composition body with a gorgeous finish (re-glue to pinky on right hand), a lace-trimmed gauze chemise which is clean, and crisp, because it contains the original sizing, and even original shoes (loss to one metal buckle) and socks.

She did tell us the only thing on her "wish list" is a colorful play dress – maybe you could find her one? Oh...and that original boxes can be a problem to display!
