Virgin with Tinsel Wreath

This eighteenth-century Virgin is an enigma to be sure. Standing nearly ten inches tall overall, there is little doubt that she has magical properties. Her construction is simple-her base is molded papier-mache, but her face and limbs are exquisite, as is her original, period, silk-brocade gown.
A petite jewel...

Christ Child
German,

Mid-18th Century

Composed of carved wood, gesso and paint, this figure of the Christ Child does his humble materials proud. Mid eighteenth-century artisans working in Germany furnished countless cathedrals and private chapels with such figures...emphasis please, on artisans, for today we display their lovely works as just that...art. Measures: 17" tall. (Loss to fingers, reglues and now mounted on a faux marble base.)

$3500.00

Shown on page 22 in "Rare and Lovely-Dolls of Two Centuries" by John Darcy Noble.

Saint John, The Baptist
An exquisite, mid-eighteenth-century, Italian, carved wood figure that depicts a youthful John, The Baptist.
Highlights include a translucent, mostly original paint finish, artful carving that borders on sculpture, beautifully painted eyes and delicately carved lips with a space between them..details reserved for the very few. This figure would have been originally clothed in a camel-skin loincloth, thus the paint on the chest and lower body.
The figure stands twenty-three and one-half inches tall.
