"Gutter House" Attr. to Whitney Reed Circa early 1900's
This charming dollhouse, circa early 1900s, is attributed to Whitney Reed, and known as a “gutter house” for the wooden gutters that run along either side of the roof. The house (which is a very manageable size), is constructed using a mix of carton and wood and is covered with brightly colored lithographed paper with a mix of faux exteriors including brick, fish scale, and shiplap in a palette of soft, brick red, green and yellow. The peaked roof of paper covered carton is fully removable.
Further details include a covered lower front porch with painted-green wooden newel posts, and an upper walk, painted-green wooden ball finials adorn both upper and lower porches. The front of the house opens to reveal the interior rooms which retain their original papers including a monochromatic red floral / paisley print (downstairs), and a geometric pinwheel motif in golden yellow and blue (upstairs) The ceiling also retains the original paper in a blue and red floral/vine motif. Interior wallpaper in very strong condition. The exterior presents normal wear and separation, particularly to front but displays wonderfully.
Room floors measure 5 7/8” deep, 7 3/4” wide, ceilings measure, 6” tall (downstairs), 8 1/4” upstairs. The overall dimensions, including wooden base are: 10” wide, 8 3/4” deep, 16 1/2” tall
