Papier-Mâché Motschmann, Circa 1850
Papier-Mâché Motschmann, Circa 1850
We are delighted to offer a papier-mâché infant, circa 1850, who collectors refer to as a “Motschmann”. Details include a papier-mâché head, with beautifully modeled features, black glass pupil-less eyes, and the suggestion of hair at the temples. (Age-related crazing around eyes and front of neck.)
The papier-mâché and wood body retains it’s original finish, and is held together by the original cotton twill. Remarkably, there is a fully operable squeaker in the center section.
Body does present normal age-related wear including a missing right index finger, paint loss to upper arms and separation to seams of right legs.
Cozy layers are worn, including a wool flannel slip with a wrap style bodice, a button front long sleeved shirt in fine cotton jersey (scattered holes to cuffs) and a high waisted cotton gown with tucks and embroidery at the bodice. A lace bonnet trimmed with silk ribbon frames baby’s face.
Measures: 13 1/2” long
