German China Costumed as "The Southern Widow"
German China Costumed as "The Southern Widow"
Here is your opportunity to acquire a piece of Carmel Doll Shop fundraising history. This exquisite china doll, a classic flat-top, was originally utilized as a centerpiece display at one of our famed Rose Percy events in 2011. She is wonderfully costumed in black as a “Southern Widow.” The doll features fine facial modeling and painting including blue eyes, full, deeply blushed cheeks, and a slight double chin. Her molded and painted black hairstyle features face framing waves and a crisp row of curls in back.
She is on a cloth body with graceful china lower arms and lower legs that terminate in flat soled black boots. Her incredible two-piece mourning costume is rendered in black silk (mellowed to a soft charcoal) and featuring a lavish skirt with a subtle train, silk organza trim, and a border of black lace edged in silk ruffles above the hem. A fitted jacket trimmed in silk ruffles completes the costume. Perhaps the pièce de résistance is a hauntingly beautiful bonnet comprised of black velvet, silk ribbon and a lavish veil of black tulle trimmed with narrow guimpe trim. Underneath, a hoop skirt, two petticoats and pantalettes are worn.
