Charming Steiner Gigoteur

$2,800.00

We just love the child-like charm of this twenty inch Steiner Gigoteur – a magical combination of mechanical marvel and beauty. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the models sometimes referred to as "crying – kicking Steiners," these dolls were originally designed to portray agitated infants. When the internal mechanism is wound and while lying on its back, the doll cries, while moving its arms, legs and head in a realistic manner. When lifted, the arms, legs and head continue to move, but the bebe changes its cry to a definite "Mama" and "Papa" – a feature that was surely nothing short of magic to a nineteenth-century child! The doll boasts a perfect bisque solid dome head, an especially wonderful expression complete with an open mouth and two rows of teeth, pretty blue paperweight eyes, and an original natural curly lamb skin wig in its original style. On a body with composition limbs that retains its original paint finish (paint on hands presents scattered loss), she wears a sweet, drop waist dress in fine cotton with eyelet lace details, rows of tucks and a double tiered hem of ruffled eyelet lace. This child accessorizes with pink glass floral earrings and a pressed glass heart pin. Underneath, she wears a fine cotton all in one and a cotton slip. Finely ribbed cotton stockings under side button blue leather boots complete her charming presentation. The mechanism is activated by a key in her side that moves her arm and turns her head from side to side however, the sound and movement in the legs is non-functional. Measures: 20" tall.
