Multi-Faced Carl Bergner Toy
Multi-Faced Carl Bergner Toy
Here we have a marvelous toy in the form of this multi-faced German child by Carl Bergner. This very nice example features a bisque head that rotates to reveal three distinct facial expressions. One face features a happy, smiling expression with set brown glass eyes, an open mouth with molded teeth, another side of the face portrays an unhappy child with wrinkled brows, a downturned open/closed mouth and molded tears, while a third face portrays a serene, sleeping expression with closed eyes and a closed mouth. The head is covered by a carton hood, over which is placed a cotton bonnet and the head can be turned by a brass loop at the top of head. Her body features a carton torso covered in cloth, cloth upper legs and jointed composition arms and lower legs. A non-functioning squeaker was originally activated with string pull mechanism that remains inserted at her waist. She wears a fine cotton gown and slip with scalloped and embroidered edges and blue silk ribbons throughout, plus an antique petticoat with crocheted lace insets.
Measures 14 1/4” tall.
