Here we have an incredible, artfully carved wood peddler doll with lovely features including painted-blue eyes, delicately blushed cheeks and vivid, rose red lips. A chestnut brown synthetic wig is styled in a braid at the crown of her head.
Her classic ensemble includes a blouse of fine white cotton, a full, striped flannel skirt and an apron of windowpane cotton. A cloak of textured black silk with a ruffled hood and fastened with an antique black jet pin completes her costume. Her basket is overflowing with tempting goods including jointed wooden dolls that were obviously created by the artist, plus toys and strands of beads. She is on a cloth body with a wooden shoulderhead and carved wood lower arms. Underneath, she wears fine cotton underthings including a petticoat and pantalettes. Her feet are sewn in the shape of heeled boots in a black satin finish fabric. In beautiful condition, a label sewn into the interior hem of the petticoat reads: Margaret Panek, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
