“Number One Jolly" an Elfen Creature by Barbara Fernando, Circa 1970’s
Here we have a piece of California dollmaking history with a rare “Jolly Chow” character made in San Francisco, California, by doll artist Barbara Fernando. Barbara was inspired by Palmer Cox’s Brownies when she created her Jollies and they are incredibly rare to come by. This imp features a perfect bisque head with wonderful character features, full, blushed cheeks, a charming, crooked smile, gently pointed ears, and antique brown glass eyes gently shadowed, fringed with black lashes and framed by molded and painted brows.
On a jointed, long-limbed latex body that is painted a rich pea green and features integrated, pointed toe boots, our Jolly wears a bolero style jacket of brown felt with an orange tie at the throat. In wonderful condition and ready to bring a touch of whimsy to your collection! Head Incised: Barbara Fernando
