Vintage Life-sized Ventriloquist Figure, Attr. to Ken Spencer Circa 1940/50’s
“There’s no business like show business.” and this vintage life-sized ventriloquist figure is ready for an epic return to the stage - or the doll room! Deaccessioned from a puppetry museum, this happy fellow boasts great character modeling to his carved wooden head. His face boasts full cheeks with a scattering of freckles, blue glass eyes, applied eyebrows, and full, scarlet red lips curved in a wide grin with a row of upper teeth. His head is in good condition save for a small area of discoloration to the inner corner of right eyelid. He wears a synthetic auburn wig styled in abundant curls. His head is mounted on a handle which is accessible through his open back and allows manual operation (with an assortment of levers and pulls) of his lower jaw, eyes (eye movement sticky and only moves right eye) and the ability to turn his head from side to side by rotating the handle.
His upper torso features an armature of lightweight wood which is covered in the front with cotton. His arms are firmly stuffed with a horsehair / excelsior type filling terminate in nicely detailed carved wooden hands in good condition with only minor wear. His weighted legs are firmly stuffed with a horsehair / excelsior type filling and feature hinge sewn knees. He has been re-costumed in vintage and modern pieces including a red turtleneck (which is glued on at the collar), a navy-blue blazer and houndstooth pants in a palette of red and blue. A pair of vintage brown leather shoes worn over marled purple socks complete his charming presentation. An incredible piece that would bring endless charm to the doll room or puppet theater! Attributed to Ken Spencer Circa 1940/50’s.
