Milly's Miniatures "The Organ Grinder"
Milly's Miniatures "The Organ Grinder"
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming characters were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
"The Organ Grinder” is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face with a black yarn moustache. His head of soft black yarn is topped with a velvet hat. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, he wears a red and white checked shirt under black overalls. He operates an organ, while a monkey featuring a pipe cleaner body and a wrapped thread costume is on a lead. He stands on a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures from the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley Milly's Miniatures "The Organ Grinder”
