Milly's Miniatures “The Raggedy Man”
Milly's Miniatures “The Raggedy Man”
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
The Raggedy Man” is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face with a cob pipe in his mouth and a russet yarn moustache. His head of russet yarn hair is topped with a black felt hat. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, he wears a black vest over a blue chambray shirt and blue cotton pants with tiny patches at the knees. He is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley “The Raggedy Man”
