Milly's Miniatures “The Jolly Miller”

$145.00

The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.

“The Jolly Miller” is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face with a grey yarn wig and whiskers and wearing a pair of wire spectacles. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, he wears a blue cotton coat with a white collar and a black oilcloth belt and carries a candle in a metal holder in one hand and a black walking stick in the other. He wears grey cotton britches and has a peg leg. He is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley “The Jolly Miller”
