Milly's Miniatures "Out to Old Aunt Mary's"
Milly's Miniatures "Out to Old Aunt Mary's"
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
Here we have "Out to Old Aunt Mary's.” She is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face with wire spectacles and a head of grey yarn hair. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, she wears a black dress with an organza apron and carries a cake in one hand and a knife in the other. She is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley "Out to Old Aunt Mary's"
