Milly's Miniatures “Grandma”
Milly's Miniatures “Grandma”
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
"Grandma” is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face and a head of white yarn topped with a gingham bonnet. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, she wears a delicately printed calico dress and a blue and white gingham apron. One hand rests on her hip while the other hand churns butter. She is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley "Grandma"
