Milly's Miniatures “The Circus Day Parade”
Milly's Miniatures “The Circus Day Parade”
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. The charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
“The Circus Day Parade” features a smiling clown rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely hand painted face with a beaded red clown’s nose, and a head of orange yarn hair topped with a tiny red felt top hat. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, he wears a two-toned polka dot clown’s costume with a grosgrain ribbon ruff at the neck and glossy oversized black shoes. He carries a pink floral parasol. He is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley “The Circus Day Parade”
