Milly's Miniatures “The Flower Lady”
Milly's Miniatures “The Flower Lady”
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
“The Flower Lady” is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face with a head of grey yarn hair topped with a black felt hat. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, she wears a delicately patterned calico dress, a black shawl and a green and white gingham apron. She carries a straw basket of flowers. She is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley “The Flower Lady”
