Milly's Miniatures “Little Orphant Annie”
Milly's Miniatures “Little Orphant Annie”
The beloved dolls of Milly’s Miniatures were created by Mildred "Milly" Davis (1900–1973) of Greenfield, Indiana. These charming figures were originally sold in the gift shop of the Riley House, birthplace of children’s poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916), with many of the characters derived from his poetry.
“Little Orphant Annie” is rendered in needle sculpted cotton with a nicely embroidered and hand painted face with a head of red yarn hair styled in a braid and topped with a red bow. On a body comprised of cotton over a wired armature, she wears a dress of blue-grey cotton under an apron of blue and white gingham. She carries a broom and a cloth. She is attached to a cardstock base that reads: Milly’s Miniatures From the Birthplace of James Whitcomb Riley “Little Orphant Annie”
