Betsy Ross by Lewis Sorensen
Betsy Ross by Lewis Sorensen
Here we have Betsy Ross rendered in wax and beautifully dressed by artist Lewis Sorensen (1910-1986). Sorensen who got his start in dressmaking in his native Salt Lake City, was known not only for his whimsical wax Kewpies and Christmas dolls, but for his historic figures. Details of this substantially sized beauty (who stands at just under 26” tall) include a beautifully molded face with inset blue glass eyes, rose pink cheeks and coral pink lips curved in a smile exposing nicely molded teeth (rub to tip of nose). Her face is framed by an auburn mohair wig and topped with a mob cap of fine cotton trimmed in lace.
Her body features a wax shoulderhead on a body of stuffed and stiffened fabric with lower legs of plaster (covered in attached textured stockings), while her upper arms of firmly stuffed cotton terminate in graceful wax lower arms and hands.
She wears a polonaise style gown in a palette of blue and cream with a quilted paisley petticoat, a crocheted lace apron and a bodice and polonaise of blue flowers on a field of cream. Underneath, she wears cotton underthings including two petticoats and pantalettes trimmed in eyelet lace. Her legs are covered in textured white stockings and she wears black court style shoes. She carries an American flag in her right hand and a paper star in her left hand.
Label on front of pantalettes reads: Wax Doll Made and Dressed by Lewis Sorensen
